A Message from Nancy Glaze, Executive Director
In Praise of Our Artist Laureates
It is with deep respect and admiration that I congratulate all of the 2012 Artist Laureate recipients for the artistic excellence and service they bring to this community. For the past 21 years, the Arts Council has honored individual artists in Silicon Valley as a way to recognize their talent and outstanding contributions to our cultural life. We are delighted that this year we expanded our support to include, in addition to mid-career artists, an emerging artist with a promising career ahead. And, we are thrilled to announce that Robert Kelley, the founder and artistic director of TheatreWorks, was selected as the first recipient of the Legacy Laureate, a new category created to acknowledge a lifetime of artistic achievement and community impact.
The 2012 Artist Laureates are: Kelly Detweiler, painter, resident of Santa Clara, (“On the Wall” category); Chris Eckert, sculptor, resident of San Jose, ( “Off the Wall” category); Barbara Day Turner, music director/conductor for the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, resident of San Jose, (“On Stage” category); Elizabeth McKenzie, writer, resident of Santa Cruz, (“Off Stage” category); and, Jeffrey Lo, playwright/director/producer, resident of San Jose, (“Emerging Artist” category).
I want to personally thank the artists for their dedication to their art form and for enriching the lives of so many of us. Many thanks must also go to you – our donors and supporters – for helping us increase the unrestricted cash prize from $4,000 to $5,000 for each of the recipients. Please join me in learning more about these exceptional artists by checking out the press release and artist bios. Also, be sure to check back here and on our Facebook page in the weeks ahead for more information about the 2012 Artist Laureates.
